Best budget restaurant in Amsterdam: Sugo's Pizza
Hello everyone!
Recently on the 3rd February I went to Amsterdam for a little daytrip.
Being frugal and everything we packed our own lunches but thought that for dinner we might as well appreciate the cuisine that Amsterdam has to offer, so we decided to have a look around for something nice to eat.
That's when we came across Sugo's Pizza. Granted it's not exactly typically Dutch, it even had "Arrivederci" on the door on your way out but we absolutely have no regrets about walking through those doors.
When you walk in you're immediately hit by the smell of fresh pizza being baked in the oven and when you're already hungry it's seriously mouth watering.
The counters were lined with so many different pizzas that it was impossible to even fit it in one image!
As the labels are in Dutch and not super clear in my photos, here are some examples of the unique pizzas they have:
- Pumpkin Cream, taleggio (cheese from Northern Italy), walnuts and arugula
- Potato cream, mushrooms, pesto and pine nuts
- Truffle cream sauce, mushrooms, potato, parmesan and fresh parsley
- Bolognese sauce with ground beef, red onion, mozzarella and parsley
But if there's one thing you need to take about this is that all their slices are under 4 euros each! In the pictures they look small and I only took one slice and thought "oh I'll still be hungry after this," but honestly I was full! It was very delicious!
I personally had the "Salami, tomato-basil sauce and mozzarella pizza" for 3 euros 80.
The pizza was very well cooked (just look how golden the crust is), the mozzarella was perfectly melted, it was well seasoned and the salami was of very good quality. A clear differentiation from what you might get on a Dominos pizza etc.
My boyfriend obviously came with me and he had two slices: the "Bacon bechamel sauce and mushroom pizza" and the "Chicken, peppers and mozzarella pizza."
He said that all the meat was perfectly cooked and the cheese was well melted. He noted that the chicken pizza was slightly burnt but not in a way that it impacted or ruined the taste... just made it extra crunchy!
On thing I most note though is that we had a small can of Fanta and Coca-Cola to accompany it, I was quite shocked by the price of the drinks, I must argue that it is a little too much but this would be my only criticism to be honest.
They do have a vast variety of drinks though and you can also order a warm drink and a selection of coffees if you so choose.
The actual design of the restaurant is lovely, it's very cosy and bright with modern music but not loud enough to ruin the flow of any conversation.
We personally sat on the sweet "bar-style" tables on the ground floor, however there was a beautiful upstairs too with artwork lining the walls as well as plant pots along the stairs to just give it that real homely feeling.
They have a variety of desserts but unfortunately the day I was in they were out of their Panna Cotta, date cakes and iced coffee, but I wasn't upset because instead I had their NUTELLA PIZZA!
It was my first time having a sweet pizza and oh my gosh I have no regrets. I was still full from my pizza so I asked if I could take it away. They kindly heated it and cut it for me and then boxed it for me (served as such a nice warm treat once when got back into the cold)!
Final thoughts:
I have to say I loved it here, they cater to everyone really well, having salads and a variety of vegetarian and vegan pizzas too, their pizza slices are well priced for the quality of the ingredients and the staff are very friendly. The restaurant is well decorated, clean and very family friendly. I would strongly recommend it.
Furthermore, being frugal an' all, I noticed on the table this little leaflet which I thought I'd share with you if you're in the Amsterdam area for a while.
The Frugal Teen x
